Alameda Park in downtown Alamagordo, although a small zoo in a small city (with a small budget), has a nice little zoo with a geographically diverse collection of animals. Alas like so many other small zoos it uses chain-link fencing for its enclosures, which provide cheap and easy to maintain facilities, but also makes it rather hard on photographers.
So here are some photos from a visit.
Inside the zoo
New enclosures under construction (they’re also building a new Reptile House)
Ringtail Lemur scratching an itch
I couldn’t find a sign IDing this pigeon, but it’s gorgeous
Western Screech Owl
American Kestrel watching me curiously
Mexican Grey Wolf
One of the local squirrels
A pair of Emu having a grand ole time in the sprinkler
A rat (Packrat, I think) in the Aviary–I doubt that he was supposed to be there
Aww, seeing this Cattle Egret made me a wee bit homesick for Florida
Black Bear taking a nap
